Description
This was just as much a four-wheel drive excursion for me as it was a hike to a new peak. I had been wanting to get our with my newish Ineos Grenadier and test it a bit, so I decided to drive the Bill Moore Lake Trail as far as I could to the base of the east slopes of Breckenridge Peak and then hike the slopes for a quick summit. On X Offroad has this drive rated 7 or difficult. I only used my center and rear locker on one steep section right at a switchback; otherwise four low worked for the rest of the route.
I had hiked a lot of the summits around Breckenridge Peak including Stanley Mountain, Colorado Mines Peak, Mount Flora, Witter Peak, Mount Eva, Parry Peak, Mount Bancroft, Kingston Peak, and James Peak. This trip would finish off the final mountain in this general area. I drove to 11,400' and could see my objective from where I started.
It was a fairly uneventful and straight forward hike of the east slopes of Breckenridge Peak. It was approximately half on snow and half on rock. I started hiking at 8:55 am with great weather all day. I reached the summit at 10:30 am. I spent 10 minutes on the summit and returned to my vehicle at 11:25 am for a 2.5 hour car-to-car morning. After returning to Denver, Colorado, I went golfing with my wife and two daughters for Memorial Day.
