Description
After taking a weekend off, I was back hiking a Colorado Bi-Centennial Peak on my birthday. Mount White has been remeasured at 13,657' and dropped in ranking from the 163rd highest peak in Colorado to the 169th. Nevertheless, Mount White sits just south of 14er Mount Antero. I car camped at 11,300' unsure of how far up the Mount Antero Road I could drive in my stock Toyota FJ Cruiser. After hiking the road all morning, I realized I could have literally driven to 13,200' or approximately 450' below the summit of Mount White. Oh well.
I hiked the Mount Antero Road and cut a couple of switchbacks to the mountain's southwest shoulder at 13,100'. I then had to drop a few hundred feet to a very broad saddle northwest of Mount White. From here it is a simple trek to the top of the peak where I had cell phone service and spent 30 minutes relaxing. There was a fair amount of activity in the general area from both hikers and four-wheeling enthusiasts.
Since it was a relatively short 5-hour car-to-car morning, I decided to try and drive up to Baldwin Lake and possibly hike Mount Mamma for a second Bi-Centennial Peak of the day. However, the road proved to be impassible after only a short distance, and I didn't have time to hike the extra miles, so I simply returned home.
