Description

I have climbed at Moffat Tunnel Ice twice before. Once in 2012 and once in 2019. Each time it feels like it was the second or third alternative since the climbing isn't particularly spectacular. Kevin was reluctant to head up I-70 due to ski traffic, and the forecast for Lincoln Falls was really cold and windy. As a consolation, we drove up to the East Portal of Moffat Tunnel and climbed the ice to the southwest of the tunnel entrance.

Neither of us had been in the area for some time, so we missed the packed trail and ended up post-holing to get to the climb. We each did a few leads and then ended the day running multiple laps on top rope. There was one other party on the ice, but there was plenty of room for all of us. We stopped at the local brewery in Rollinsville, Colorado, on the way home for a quick pint.
