Description

This hike is located just southeast of Coeur D' Alene, Idaho, and the road is paved all the way to the trailhead.  I got a head start on the day, but unfortunately I was still half asleep when I left the house to go hiking.  A few miles down the road I looked over at Payton and realized I left my day pack at the house.  I stopped off at a grocery store and bought a bottle of water, some snacks, and a disposable camera.  The Caribou Ridge Trail #79 starts off with slow easy switchbacks up a fairly steep ridge.  After about two miles, it levels off and the walking becomes easier.  You catch glimpses of Beauty Bay and Lake Coeur D' Alene on the way up, but you are in timber most of the way.  There is a picnic area at the top which you can actually drive to.  After the hike, I stopped off at the International House of Pancakes for a hot cup of coffee and a Belgium waffle.
